The news of John Terry leaving Chelsea Football club at the end of the current season has got the Chelsea fans all over the world into a heartbreak. The announcement marks an end of era in the Chelsea football club’s history. John Terry is the last remaining player that won the premier league title in 2004/05 still playing for the club. The Chelsea legend is considered one of the greatest player in the club’s history and the footballing world. He played as a center-back for both the club and country.
John Terry joined the club at the age of 14 and has since been with the club. He spent a brief period at Nottingham Forest on loan. Terry made his first appearance for Chelsea at the age of 17 against Aston Villa in the league cup. Since then he has made 713 appearances, club’s third highest all-time appearances behind Ron Harris and Peter Bonetti. He has scored 66 times for the club making him club’s all-time highest scoring defender. Most of his appearances for Chelsea has been as a captain – 578 appearances, a club record. He is the club’s most successful captain with 4 Premier league titles, 4 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, 1 UEFA Champions League and 1 UEFA Europa League. On individual level, he has been named in FIFA FIFPro WorldXI consecutively for 5 times from 2005 to 2009 and in UEFA Team of the Year in 4 occasions.
The departure of the club legend will be hard for the fans who wished him to retire at the club. At the age of 36, the center-back was getting less playing time under the new manager Antonio Conte in the current season. Conte opted for young defenders in his 3-4-3 system which saw Terry on the bench most of the making only 5 PL appearances. Terry on his announcement said he still has some football left on him and the opportunities at the club were limited. He still has not made where he will be playing next.
On February 2016, Terry had announced he would leave the club at the end of the season. Fans were hoping to see the captain remain at the club and there was pressure from the fans all over the world to extend his contract. On May 2016, he signed a new one-year contract keeping him at the club until the end of 2016/17 season. Fans will be happy to see the same thing to happen this year again but to be realistic the chances are very thin. Fans and Terry himself is well aware his time at Chelsea is over. But the club has a chance to give one more PL title as a departing gift to the legend. Chelsea are currently at the top of the league with 4-points lead to 2nd placed Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea are also playing Tottenham in FA Cup semi-final. A domestic double is still possible and Chelsea legend will be happy to add 2 more titles to his resume.
Wherever might be his next destination, the club faithfuls will always be obliged to their captain for the service he has provided to the club and wish him well for the future. The fans will like to see their captain return to Stamford Bridge in a different role. It will be a joy to watch him in the Chelsea dugout alongside another club legend Frank Lampard.
John Terry will forever be the CAPTAIN, LEADER,LEGEND for the Chelsea blues. Adios Captain! JT26!!
